Ugly Love - By Colleen Hoover
February is month of love, red roses and candy hearts. With Valentines Day around the corner, I decided to read some romance novels. I have heard a lot about Colleen Hoover with fans devouring and taunting her books to read. I started with my first book of hers, Ugly Love. In researching her book, I found out this book almost became a movie.
And here it goes…Ugly Love Review
The book starts with our protagonist coming to live in SF, which I can relate to being a transplant to SF as well. She (aka Tate) is a nurse with little time for personal life. The other main character is a pilot (Miles) the neighbor of Tate’s brother Corbin who she decides to live with and be roommate with him for a while.
I was happy to know the book centered around a pilot and their lifestyle. I am fascinated with the life of a pilot maybe it is due to enjoying flying. I loved airports as a little girl. It is a place that can take you anywhere in the world you want to go. I knew my way around airports well when I did travel and it brings a sense of excitement. I was like Miles taking Tate to a place to watch the planes at the airport. I still like to plane watch and the thrill of seeing a plane cross the freeway landing to the airport while driving near a airport.
Colleen Hoover has a different writing style alternating with chapter for our main character Tate and the other for our other main character Miles. Mike’s chapters were shorter but it makes sense in the end and with knowing the ending, I like how his story developed now. In beginning I wasn’t sure especially with some of the ways he treated Tate even getting angry with her, wanting to scream at her for putting up with some of his poor treatment toward her and falling back to him.
I knew romance novels typically have spicy and racy scenes. Colleen Hoover did not disappoint capturing the passion in her words. But I was not prepared for the twists in plot and development of this couple. There was more to the story and the book had more depth than I thought it would. Perhaps thinking it was romance genre, it would just be full of passion and not much character development. The story starts off as a no string attached relationship but it grows to something much more. The idea that love can be passionate and that it can bring you back to life, wanting to be with that person now in the present and how it can also be so healing. It left me wanting to know what would happen next and I was sad when the book was over. I keep thinking ruminating about the plot and how it developed and ended several days after reading.
I would recommend this book for the romance genre. I read it in a couple days. It was a good introduction to Colleen Hoover’s books. I will definitely be reading more of her books in the future. It is not just another romance novel. There is much more depth and character development. I am not a crier for book which I can imagine some reader may cry with this story. The story did give me more sympathy to them as the characters did tug at my heartstrings. No spoilers to this review so please read it for yourself. You may also get some ideas to explore with your partner and it’s a nice reminder to keep the passion and the importance of love in your life.
